The Battle of Harim (Harenc) was fought on 12 August 1164 near Artah between the forces of Nur ad-Din Zangi and a combined army from the County of Tripoli, the Principality of Antioch, the Byzantine Empire and Armenia. Nur ad-Din won a crushing victory, capturing most of the leaders of the opposing army.

The siege of Zadar (12 August 1345 – 21 December 1346) was a successful attempt of the Republic of Venice to capture Zadar (or Zara), a Croatian coastal city in northern Dalmatia. It was a combined land and sea offensive by the Venetians, consisting of many separate battles and operations against the citizens of Zadar, who refused to accept Venetian suzerainty and demanded autonomy.

The Battle of Renty was fought on 12 August 1554, between France and the Holy Roman Empire at Renty, a northern French secondary theatre of the Italian Wars. The French were led by Francis, Duke of Guise, while the Imperial forces were led by Emperor Charles V of Habsburg. On 8 August, the French appeared at Renty. The Spanish cavalry charged the French infantry forcing a retreat, while their infantry were in the Bois Guillaume. The French infantry were rallied by Gaspar de Saulx-Tavannes who charged, while the Spanish infantry were pushed out of the woods by Gaspard de Coligny, and routed by Francis, Duke of Guise.

The Battle of Shklov (also spelt Shklow, Szkłów, or Shkloŭ) took place on August 12, 1654, and was one of the first battles of the Russo-Polish War (1654–67); it ended with a indecisive, however, by other sources. A small Polish–Lithuanian force of about 6,000–7,000 under Great Lithuanian Hetman Janusz Radziwiłł surprised a numerically superior Russian force (of 40,000; some estimates speak of 70,000, but they are likely too high) under knyaz Yakov Cherkassky near Shklow (Polish: Szkłów).

The Battle of Kunersdorf, fought in the Seven Years' War, was Frederick the Great's most devastating defeat. On August 12, 1759, near Kunersdorf (Kunowice), east of Frankfurt (Oder), 50,900 Prussians were defeated by a combined allied army 65,000 strong consisting of 41,000 Russians and 24,000 Austrians under Pyotr Saltykov and Ernst Gideon von Laudon. Only 3,000 soldiers from the original 50,900 comprising the Prussian army returned to Berlin after the battle, though many more had only scattered and were ultimately able to join the army afterward.

The Battle of Puerto de Baños (12 August 1809) saw a Portuguese-Spanish column led by Robert Thomas Wilson attempt to defend a mountain pass against Marshal Michel Ney's VI Corps. After a nine-hour combat, Wilson's force broke up and scattered into the mountains. Baños de Montemayor is located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northeast of Plasencia, Spain. The clash occurred during the Peninsular War, part of a larger struggle known as the Napoleonic Wars. In the summer of 1809, the British army of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington marched into western Spain to join Gregorio García de la Cuesta's Spanish army.

The Battle of Paso de Cuevas was fought on August 12, 1865 during the Paraguayan invasion of the Argentine province of Corrientes. Following losses after the Battle of Riachuelo, and running the gauntlet set up by Bruguez at Bella Vista in the Battle of Paso de Mercedes the day before, the allied fleet advanced down the River Parana, not wanting to be cut off from its supply base. However, the pass at Cuevas was once again manned by 3000 of Bruguez's men with 34 guns. Barroso suffered 24 dead and 42 wounded.

The Battle of Piribebuy was fought on August 12, 1869 in the Paraguayan town of Piribebuy, which was then serving as a temporary capital of the Paraguayan government. The Paraguayan defenders, who were poorly armed and included children, fought the attacks of the Allied forces, led by French-born Brazilian general Prince Gaston, son-in-law of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. The town refused two peace envoys, calling for surrender, sent by the Conde d'Eu. At 0400, the Brazilian batteries surrounding the town started a bombardment which lasted until 0800, when the infantry charged. Gen. Jao Manuel Mena Barreto was mortally wounded leading a cavalry charge.

The Battle of Carrizo Canyon was one of several battles between Apache warriors and United States Cavalry troops in New Mexico Territory. On August 12, 1881 a squad on nineteen 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers were attacked by native warriors in Carrizo Canyon.

The Battle of Halen or Haelen, was a cavalry battle at the beginning of World War I. The battle is also known as the Battle of the Silver Helmets (Dutch: Slag der Zilveren Helmen French: Bataille des casques d'argent), an analogy with the Battle of the Golden Spurs of 1302, because of the many cavalry helmets left behind on the battlefield by the German Cuirassiers. Halen is a small market town which was on the principal axis of advance of the Imperial German army, where there was a good crossing point over the Gete River.

The Kurtez ambush occurred on August 12, 1943, near the village of Kurtez in the Kolonjë District of Korçë County in southeastern Albania. It was carried out by Balli Kombëtar during the Albanian Resistance of World War II. Two hundred local Balli Kombëtar militants, commanded by Qemal Burimi and David Smiley, ambushed a German convoy and a troop carrier, inflicting heavy losses on the German troops.

The Sant'Anna di Stazzema massacre was a Nazi German war crime committed in the hill village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema in Tuscany, Italy, in the course of an operation against the Italian resistance movement during the Italian Campaign of World War II. On 12 August 1944, about 560 (130 children) local villagers and refugees were murdered and their bodies burnt in a scorched earth policy action by the German occupation forces of the Waffen-SS. These crimes have been defined as voluntary and organized acts of terrorism by the Military Tribunal of La Spezia and the highest Italian court of appeal.

The Babrra massacre occurred on 12 August 1948 in the Charsadda District of the North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pukhtunkhwa) of Pakistan, when unarmed workers of the Khudai Khidmatgar movement were fired upon by the provincial government on the orders of the then Chief Minister Khan Abdul Qayyum Khan. The protest was against the promulgation of Public Safety Ordinance by the provincial governor and the resulting arrests of Khudai Khidmatgar leaders and confiscations of properties.

The Bloody Gulch massacre was a war crime that took place in the Korean War on August 12, 1950 in "Bloody Gulch", west of Masan, South Korea. After a very successful attack on two undefended US Artillery Battalions that killed or wounded hundreds of US troops, members of the North Korean People's Army (KPA) 13th Regiment executed seventy-five captured US Army prisoners of war during one of the smaller engagements of the Battle of Pusan Perimeter. The troops were from the 555th Field Artillery Battalion (24th Infantry Division) and the 90th Field Artillery Battalion (25th Infantry Division).

Indirect presidential elections were held in South Korea on 12 August 1960, which saw the election of Yun Posun as President of the Republic of Korea, a ceremonial political position in the Second Republic. The Battle of the Bogside was a very large communal riot that took place during 12–14 August 1969 in Derry, Northern Ireland. The fighting was between residents of the Bogside area (organised under the Derry Citizens' Defence Association), and the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) along with local unionists. The rioting erupted at the end of an Apprentice Boys parade which was passing along the city walls, past the Catholic Bogside. Fierce rioting broke out between local unionists and the police on one side and Catholics on the other. Rioting between police and Bogside residents continued for three days.

The Tel al-Zaatar massacre was the killing of approximately 1,500 Palestinians and Lebanese Muslims in the Tel al-Zaatar refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon on 12 August 1976. The massacre occurred during the Lebanese Civil War, after the Tel al-Zaatar refugee camp had been under siege since January 1976 by Lebanese Christian militias of the Lebanese Front led by the Kataeb Phalangists. The attack on al-Zaatar was part of a wider campaign to expel Palestinians from Lebanon, especially those affiliated with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). After the massacre, the Tel al-Zaatar refugee camp was depopulated and destroyed.

Japan Air Lines Flight 123 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Tokyo to Osaka, Japan. On the evening of Monday, August 12, 1985, the Boeing 747 flying the route suffered a severe structural failure and explosive decompression 12 minutes after takeoff. After flying under minimal control for 32 minutes, the plane crashed in the area of Mount Takamagahara, 100 kilometres (62 mi; 54 nmi) from Tokyo.

The 2002 Indian vice presidential election was held on 12 August 2002 to elect the newly vacated post of the vice president of India. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat defeated Sushil Kumar Shinde to become 11th vice president of India. Incumbent VP Krishan Kant did not contest the election and died before the election occurred. Professional wrestling is a type of sports entertainment in which theatrical events are combined with a competitive sport. The buildup to the matches and the scenarios that took place before, during, and after the event, were planned by JCW's script writers. The event starred wrestlers from JCW's SlamTV! internet wrestling show, as well as guest wrestlers from the independent circuit. The event was the first produced under the Bloodymania name.

On 12 August 2021, a mass shooting occurred in Keyham, Plymouth, England. The gunman, 22-year-old Jake Davison, shot and killed five people, including his mother. Davison also injured two others before fatally shooting himself. The inquest jury returned a verdict of unlawful killing of all of the victims. The 2023 Kuala Terengganu by-election is a by-election that were held on 12 August 2023 for the Dewan Rakyat seat of Kuala Terengganu. It was called following the disqualification of incumbent, Ahmad Amzad Hashim on 27 June 2023.
