489 — Battle of Isonzo (489)
The Battle of the Isonzo, the Battle of the Aesontius, or the Battle of the Isontius is the name given to the battle fought on August 28, 489 on the banks of the Isontius River, not far away from Aquileia. This river is now known as the Isonzo in Italian, and Soča in Slovene. This battle should not be confused with the 12 Battles of the Isonzo during World War I. Theoderic the Great, king of the Ostrogoths, in 489 opened his first campaign against Odoacer to wrest Italy from him. On 28 August, the two armies met on the banks of the Isontius.

1542 — Battle of Wofla
The Battle of Wofla was fought on August 28, 1542 near Lake Ashenge in Wofla (or Ofla) in the modern Ethiopian Region of Tigray (previously part of Wollo; its incorporation into Tigray instead of Amhara is therefore disputed), between the Portuguese under Cristóvão da Gama and the forces of Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi. Reinforced with a superiority not only in numbers but in firearms, Imam Ahmad was victorious and forced the Portuguese, along with Queen Sabla Wengel and her retinue, to flee their fortified encampment and leave their weapons behind.

1573 — Capture of Geertruidenberg (1573)
The Capture of Geertruidenberg was a military event that took place on August 28, 1573 during the Eighty Years' War and the Anglo–Spanish War. The capture was by a English, French Huguenot and Flemings, force led by Colonel de Poyet. A small assault force led by Walter Morgan captured the main gate which enabled complete surprise on the garrison and most were put to the sword.

1640 — Battle of Newburn
The Battle of Newburn, sometimes known as Newburn Ford, was fought on 28 August 1640 during the Second Bishops' War between a Scottish Covenanter army led by General Alexander Leslie and English forces commanded by Edward, Lord Conway. Conway, heavily outnumbered, was defeated, and the Scots went on to occupy the town of Newcastle, obtaining a stranglehold on London's coal supply. Charles I had no choice but to agree to a truce, under which the Scottish army in northern England would be paid daily expenses, pending a final treaty of peace.

1651 — Battle of Upton
The Battle of Upton was fought on 28 August 1651 when a New Model Armydetachment under the command of Colonel John Lambert made a surprise attack on Royalists defending the river Severn crossing at Upton-Upon-Severn, 6 miles (9.7 km) below Worcester. In the action which followed the Royalist commander Major General Edward Massey was severely wounded and the surviving Royalists were driven out of the town and north along the Worcester Road. The successful attack allowed Parliamentary forces to approach Worcester from the west and was an important action in completing Cromwell's investment of Worcester as a prelude to his assault and capture of the city.

The Battle of Placilla was an engagement fought during the 1891 Chilean Civil War between Balmacedist and Congressional forces on 28 August 1891. The Congressist victory in the battle essentially decided the fate of the war. Congressist troops entered Santiago on August 30. The 1919 Victorian local elections were held on 28 August 1919 to elect the councils of 42 of the local government areas in Victoria, Australia. Two councils also held mayoral elections. Until the 1994 reforms introduced by the Kennett state government, all local elections were staggered, with not all councillors up for election each year. Labor gained several council seats, with the vast majority of their candidates running as Caucus Labor candidates.

The Battle of Monte Pelado ("Bald Mountain") was an engagement of the Spanish Civil War fought on 28 August 1936. It was notable as the first major engagement of the Italian Republican volunteers of the Matteotti Battalion. Monte Pelado, in Aragon, between Huesca and Almudévar, was the site of a Francoist gun emplacement and a concentration of around five hundred Nationalist troops. In bitter fighting from five until nine in the morning, Italians and the Spanish anarchists of the Francisco Ascaso column seized the Nationalist position while suffering heavy losses.

The 1st Congress of the Workers' Party of North Korea (WPNK) was held in Pyongyang, North Korea, from 28–30 August 1946, and established the WPNK (the forerunner to the Workers' Party of Korea). The congress is the highest organ of the party, and is stipulated to be held every four years. A total of 801 delegates represented the party's 336,399 members. The 1st Central Committee, elected by the congress, elected Kim Tu-bong as WPNK Chairman, Kim Il-sung and Chu Yong-ha as deputy chairmen.

1986 — The Big Event
The Big Event was a professional wrestling event produced by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) on August 28, 1986, at the Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, Ontario. It drew a crowd of over 64,000 fans, which was an outdoor attendance record at the time. This stood as an attendance record for a wrestling show until WrestleMania III drew a reported 93,173 fans just seven months later to the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. A VHS tape of the event was released later by Coliseum Home Video, with commentary by Gorilla Monsoon, Johnny Valiant and Ernie Ladd.

The 1990 Plainfield tornado was a devastating tornado that struck Plainfield, Illinois in the Chicago metropolitan area during the afternoon of August 28, 1990. The violent tornado killed 29 people and injured 353. It is the only F5/EF5 rated tornado officially recorded in August in the United States (the 1883 Rochester, Minnesota tornado is unofficially considered an F5), and the only F5 tornado to strike the Chicago area.

1993 — 1993 Tajikistan Airlines Yakovlev Yak-40 crash
On 28 August 1993 a non-scheduled domestic passenger flight operated by Tajikistan Airlines and served by a Yakovlev Yak-40 crashed during takeoff at Khorog Airport, killing 82 people on board (including 14 children). Militants during the civil war in Tajikistan forced the crew to take more passengers than the aircraft was able to carry, which led to an excess takeoff weight.

The 1998 UEFA Super Cup was a football match that was played on 28 August 1998 at Stade Louis II, Monaco, contested between Champions League winners Real Madrid and Cup Winners' Cup holders Chelsea. Neither team had previously won the trophy. Chelsea won the match 1–0 with a late goal from Di Matteo. This was the first Super Cup to be played as a one-off match at a neutral venue. Previously it was played over two legs, although on some occasions, only one match was played, due to special circumstances.

2006 — Battle of Diwaniya
The Battle of Diwaniya took place in Diwaniyah, 180 kilometers south of Baghdad, on 28 August 2006 between the Mahdi Army and the Iraqi Army. The fighting erupted after coalition troops arrested a Sadr militia leader. The militia engaged in heavy street fighting with Iraqi soldiers which lasted late into the night. Militia fighters were entrenched in residential areas during the fighting. The Iraqi Army claims that most of its casualties occurred when Mahdi militiamen captured and executed a group of soldiers who had run out of ammunition. By next morning a ceasefire was in place with 23 Iraqi soldiers, 20 militiamen and 7 civilians killed.

La Jaula de la Muerte (Spanish for "The Cage of Death") was a special professional wrestling event produced by the International Wrestling Revolution Group (IWRG), that took place on August 28, 2011, at Arena Naucalpan in Naucalpan, State of Mexico. The focal point of the show and the inspiration for the event name was the main event steel cage match between four trios teams with each group "betting" something on the outcome of the match. Ryōgoku Peter Pan 2016: World's Hottest Summer (両国ピーターパン2016〜世界でいちばん熱い夏〜, Ryōgoku Pītā Pan 2016: Sekai de Ichiban Atsui Natsu) was a professional wrestling event promoted by DDT Pro-Wrestling (DDT). The 2021 Northern Territory local elections were held on 28 August 2021 to elect the councils of the 17 local government areas (LGAs) in the Northern Territory, Australia. Six councils also held mayoral elections. 303 candidates contested the elections to fill a total of 159 council and mayoral positions. Two councils did not have enough nominations to fill all vacancies, causing supplementary elections to be held.

2022 — 2022 Phoenix shooting
On August 28, 2022, a mass shooting occurred outside of a Days Inn motel in Phoenix, Arizona. The perpetrator, 24-year-old Isaiah Steven Williams, wearing tactical equipment and armed with a rifle and explosive weapons, killed two people and wounded five others, including two police officers. A brief shootout ensued between the perpetrator and law enforcement before the incident ended when Williams committed suicide.
