1633 — Galileo is sentenced by the Roman Inquisition

The Roman Inquisition pronounced its judgment against Galileo Galilei after proceedings concerning his defense of a moving Earth and a Sun-centered planetary system. Galileo was found vehemently suspected of heresy and required to recant the positions at issue. His sentence of imprisonment was later commuted to house arrest, under which he spent the remainder of his life. The case followed the publication of his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems and involved questions of scriptural interpretation, authority, and scientific argument. It remains a major episode in discussions of the relationship between religious institutions and the development of early modern science.
