The First Battle of St Albans, fought on 22 May 1455 at St Albans, 22 miles (35 km) north of London, traditionally marks the beginning of the Wars of the Roses. Richard, Duke of York and his allies, the Neville Earls of Salisbury and Warwick, defeated a royal army commanded by Edmund Beaufort, Duke of Somerset, who was killed.

1499 — Battle of Calven
The Battle of Calven (Romansh: Chalavaina) took place on May 22, 1499 at the exit of the Val Müstair in the Grisons (now part of Switzerland) to the Vinschgau in County of Tyrol (now part of Italy) between the forces of king Maximilian I of the House of Habsburg and those of the free federation of the Three Leagues of the Grisons. It was the decisive battle in the southern Grisons of the Swabian War; after the defeat of the Habsburg troops, the king had to abandon his attempts to control the Engadin and the Val Müstair.

1762 — Treaty of Hamburg (1762)
The Treaty of Hamburg was signed on 22 May 1762 in Hamburg between Sweden and Prussia during the Pomeranian War, a theater of the Seven Years' War. The treaty came into being after Russia had allied to Prussia on 5 May, making it impossible for Sweden to continue the war which they had entered to regain territories in Pomerania, which they had previously lost.

1794 — Battle of Tournay (1794)
The Battle of Tournay or Battle of Tournai or Battle of Pont-à-Chin (22 May 1794) saw Republican French forces led by Jean-Charles Pichegru attack Coalition forces under Emperor Francis II and Prince Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. After a bitter all-day struggle, Coalition troops recaptured a few key positions including Pont-à-Chin, forcing the French to retreat. Pichegru did not maintain effective tactical control during the battle.

Partial legislative elections were held in Belgium on 22 May 1898, with run-off elections held on 29 May.Under the alternating system, elections for the Chamber of Representatives were held in only four out of the nine provinces: Hainaut, Limburg, Liège and East Flanders. Thus, only 75 seats out of the 152 seats in the Chamber of Representatives were up for election.The Catholic Party retained their absolute majority. Notably, Adolf Daens, who was elected in 1894 for Aalst and served one term, was convinced not to run for re-election. His fight for a social Christian Democratic party was opposed by conservative Catholics, especially fellow Aalst MP Charles Woeste.

1915 — Quintinshill rail disaster
The Quintinshill rail disaster was a multi-train rail crash which occurred on 22 May 1915 outside the Quintinshill signal box near Gretna Green in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. It resulted in the deaths of over 200 people, and is the worst rail disaster in British history. Quintinshill box controlled two passing loops on each side on the Caledonian Main Line linking Glasgow and Carlisle (now part of the West Coast Main Line). At the time of the accident, both passing loops were occupied with goods trains and a northbound local passenger train was standing on the southbound main line.

The Northern Ireland general election, 1929 was held on 22 May 1929. Like all previous elections to the Parliament of Northern Ireland, it produced a large majority for the Ulster Unionist Party. It was the first held after the abolition of proportional representation and the redrawing of electoral boundaries to create single-seat constituencies. As with the rest of the United Kingdom, this has made it more difficult for independent and minor party candidates to gain election.

The Sri Lalang by-election was a state assembly by-election that was held on 22 May 1960 in the state of Johor, Malaysia. The Sri Lalang seat fell vacant following the death of its MCA MLA Cheong Soo Kheng which won the seat in 1959 Malayan general election. Ong Kai Beng of Alliance, won the by election, defeating Mohamed Zain Mohamed of Socialist Front with a slim majority of 729 votes.

Continental Airlines Flight 11, registration N70775, was a Boeing 707 aircraft which exploded in the vicinity of Centerville, Iowa, United States, while en route from O'Hare Airport, Chicago, Illinois, to Kansas City, Missouri, on May 22, 1962. The aircraft crashed in a clover field near Unionville, in Putnam County, Missouri, killing all 45 crew and passengers on board.

1967 — L'Innovation Department Store fire
The L'Innovation fire was a fire which took place at the À L'Innovation department store on the Rue Neuve in Brussels, Belgium on 22 May 1967. 323 people were killed, 150 injured and the department store itself, the work of the architect Victor Horta, was destroyed. In the aftermath of the fire, there was speculation that it might have been started by anti-American, Maoist protestors in the context of the Cold War and opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War. The Innovation fire was a major tragedy and remains the most deadly fire in Belgian history.

The Canadian federal election of 1979 was held on May 22, 1979 to elect members of the Canadian House of Commons of the 31st Parliament of Canada. It resulted in the defeat of the Liberal Party of Canada after 11 years in power under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Joe Clark led the Progressive Conservative Party to power, but with only a minority of seats in the House of Commons. The Liberals, however, did beat the Progressive Conservatives in the overall popular vote by more than 400,000 votes.

The 1980 Czechoslovak presidential election was carried out on 22 May 1980 by the deputies of the two houses of the nation's parliament, the Federal Assembly, rather than by popular vote. Gustáv Husák was re-elected for his second term. Husák was the only candidate considered in the joint session, and received a 343 to 0 approval from the 150 member House of the Nations (which consisted of 75 Czech and 75 Slovak deputies) and the 200 member House of the People.

1987 — Hashimpura massacre
Hashimpura massacre took place on 22 May 1987, during the Hindu-Muslim riots in Meerut city in Uttar Pradesh state, India, when 19 personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) allegedly rounded up 42 Muslim youth from the Hashimpura mohalla (locality) of the city, took them in truck to the outskirts, near Murad Nagar, in Ghaziabad district, where they were shot and their bodies were dumped in water canals. A few days later dead bodies were found floating in the canals. In May 2000, 16 of the 19 accused surrendered, and were later released on bail, while 3 were already dead.

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly election of 2008 took place in 3 phases on May 10, May 16 and May 22, 2008 in all the 224 assembly constituencies in Karnataka, India. The elections were conducted to elect a Government in the state of Karnataka for the next five years. The votes were counted on May 25, 2008 and due to the use of electronic voting machines, all the results were out by the afternoon itself. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious winning 110 seats. Although the party fell short of a clear majority, it was able to form the government with the support of 6 independents.

The Crewe and Nantwich by-election, 2008 was a parliamentary by-election held on 22 May 2008, for the British House of Commons constituency of Crewe and Nantwich, in Cheshire, England. The election was won by the Conservative party candidate Edward Timpson, who defeated the Labour party candidate Tamsin Dunwoody, on a swing from Labour to Conservative of 17.6%, a swing that in a general election would see nine Labour cabinet ministers lose their seats. At the time of the by-election, a swing of 7% in a general election would have seen the Conservatives gain an overall majority over Labour.

Air India Express Flight 812 was a scheduled international flight from Dubai International Airport, Dubai, to Mangalore International Airport, Mangaluru. On 22 May 2010, the Boeing 737-800 passenger jet operating the flight crashed on landing at Mangalore. The captain had continued an unstabilised approach, despite three calls from the first officer to initiate a "go-around", resulting in the aircraft overshooting the runway, falling down a hillside, and bursting into flames.

The 2022 Thai FA Cup final was the final match of the 2021–22 Thai FA Cup, the 28th season of a Thailand's football tournament organised by Football Association of Thailand. It was played at the Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani, Thailand on 22 May 2022, between Buriram United a big team from Buriram and Nakhon Ratchasima Mazda a big team from Nakhon Ratchasima, both are located in the Northeastern part of Thailand.

An indirect presidential election was held in Vietnam on 22 May 2024. The election took place just one year after the 2023 election of President Võ Văn Thưởng, who resigned on 20 March 2024 as part of a broad anti-corruption purge led by the Communist Party's General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng. On 18 May 2024, General Tô Lâm was nominated by the Central Committee of the Communist Party to become Vietnam's next president.

2026 — 2026 Liushenyu coal mine explosion
On 22 May 2026, a gas explosion occurred at the Liushenyu Coal Mine in Qinyuan County, Shanxi, China, killing 82 people. At the time of the explosion, 247 workers were on duty underground. According to the Xinhua News Agency, by 6:00 CST on 23 May, at least 201 people had been evacuated. Later that day, 9 people remained missing.
