The Battle of Cătlăbuga was fought on November 16, 1485, between Stephen III of Moldavia and Ottoman forces defending the surroundings of Chilia. The Moldavian army came out victorious, but Stephen was not able to continue his actions in order to regain Chilia.

1632 — Battle of Lützen (1632)
The Battle of Lützen, fought on 16 November 1632, was one of the most important of the Thirty Years' War. A Swedish army under Gustavus Adolphus, supported by troops from Saxony and Hesse-Kassel, narrowly defeated an Imperial force under Albrecht von Wallenstein. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, with Gustavus himself among the dead.

1729 — Liberation of Isfahan
The liberation of Isfahan (Persian: آزادسازی اصفهان) was a direct result of the Battle of Murche-Khort in which the Iranian army under Nader attacked and routed Ashraf Hotak's Afghan army. The day after Murche-Khort on 16 November 1729, Nader marched his army into Isfahan where the looting and mob violence that had gripped the city in the chaotic aftermath of Ashraf's departure ceased immediately.

1776 — Battle of Fort Washington
The Battle of Fort Washington was a battle fought in New York on November 16, 1776 during the American Revolutionary War between the United States and Great Britain. It was a British victory that gained the surrender of the remnant of the garrison of Fort Washington near the north end of Manhattan Island. It was one of the worst Patriot defeats. After defeating the Continental Army under Commander-in-Chief General George Washington at the Battle of White Plains, the British Army forces under the command of Lieutenant General William Howe planned to capture Fort Washington, the last American stronghold on Manhattan.

1805 — Battle of Schöngrabern
The Battle of Schöngrabern, also known as the Battle of Hollabrunn, was an engagement in the Napoleonic Wars during the War of the Third Coalition, fought on 16 November 1805 near Hollabrunn in Lower Austria, four weeks after the Battle of Ulm and two weeks before the Battle of Austerlitz (Slavkov, Moravia - now Czech Republic). The Russian army of Kutuzov was retiring north of the Danube before the French army of Napoleon. On 13 November 1805 Marshals Murat and Lannes, commanding the French advance guard, had captured a bridge over the Danube at Vienna by falsely claiming that an armistice had been signed, and then rushing the bridge while the guards were distracted.

The Battle of Campbell's Station was a battle of the Knoxville Campaign of the American Civil War, occurring on November 16, 1863, at Campbell's Station, (now Farragut), Knox County, Tennessee. In early November 1863, Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, with two divisions and about 5,000 cavalry, was detached from the Confederate Army of Tennessee near Chattanooga, Tennessee, to attack Maj. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside's Union Department of the Ohio troops at Knoxville. Following parallel routes, Longstreet and Burnside raced for Campbell's Station, a hamlet where the Concord Road, from the south, intersected the Kingston Road (now called Kingston Pike) to Knoxville.

The Battle of Tecoac (Spanish: Batalla de Tecoac) was a battle that was fought at Tecoac (municipality of Huamantla) in the Mexican state of Tlaxcala on November 16, 1876, between the forces of Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada, then President of Mexico, and those of Porfirio Díaz. The battle was a victory for Díaz, who subsequently assumed the presidency himself; Lerdo went into exile in New York.

Partial parliamentary elections were held in Portugal on 16 November 1913 to elect 37 of the 153 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. They were the first elections under the new constitution approved in 1911, which created a bicameral legislature. The result was a victory for the Democratic Party, which won 33 of the 37 seats, giving it 68 of the 153 seats in the Chamber of Deputies.

In what became known as the Brest elections (Polish: Wybory brzeskie), the pro-Sanation Nonpartisan Bloc for Cooperation with the Government took 47% of the vote and 249 of the 444 seats in Sejm and 77 of the 111 seats in the Senate.

The Waipawa by-election of 1940 was a by-election for the electorate of Waipawa held on 16 November 1940 during the 26th New Zealand Parliament. The by-election resulted from the death of the previous member Albert Jull on 24 September 1940. The by-election was won by Cyril Harker, also of the National Party. The rural seat was usually safe for non-Labour parties, but in the 1935 general election had been won by Hubert Christie of the Labour Party Christie lost the seat to the former holder Albert Jull in the 1938 general election.

1942 — Battle of Buna–Gona
The Battle of Buna–Gona was part of the New Guinea campaign in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. It followed the conclusion of the Kokoda Track campaign and lasted from 16 November 1942 until 22 January 1943. The battle was conducted by Australian and United States forces against the Japanese beachheads at Buna, Sanananda and Gona. From these, the Japanese had launched an overland attack on Port Moresby. In light of developments in the Solomon Islands campaign, Japanese forces approaching Port Moresby were ordered to withdraw to and secure these bases on the northern coast.

1952 — Greek legislative election, 1952
Parliamentary elections were held in Greece on 16 November 1952. They resulted in a victory for General Alexander Papagos and the party he had founded the previous year, the Greek Rally party. Papagos won by unifying most of the conservative forces under his leadership, and taking advantage of a weakened centre. The electorate of Konstantinos Tsaldaris' People's Party, the leading conservative party in the 1950 elections, shrank to only 1%.

Parliamentary elections were held in Hungary on 16 November 1958. They were the first elections held after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The Communist Hungarian Working People's Party had been reorganized as the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party, under the leadership of a more moderate Communist, János Kádár. However, as was the case during the era of Mátyás Rákosi, voters were presented with a single list of Communists and pro-Communist independents. The Socialist Workers' Party won 276 of the 338 seats, with the remaining 62 going to independents.

1959 — Aeroflot Flight 315 (1959)
Aeroflot Flight 315 was a scheduled passenger flight from Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow, Soviet Union, to Lviv Airport in Lviv, Ukraine. On 16 November 1959, the Antonov An-10 flying this route crashed short of the airport runway while on final approach. All 32 passengers and eight crew members were killed. The Air Accident Investigation Commission concluded the cause of the accident was a combination of design flaw and icing.

The Pakistani General elections of 1988 were held in Pakistan on 16 November 1988 to elect the 336 members and 100 Senators to the Pakistan Parliament. The Pakistan Peoples Party, led by Benazir Bhutto, ousted and disintegrated the technocratic and military government of General Zia-ul-Haq, with the parliamentary majority of 94 seats. The election was the second of four non-consecutive victories for the Pakistan Peoples Party, and Benazir became Pakistan's – and the Muslim world's— first female head of government. The previous parliamentary elections were held on 7 March 1977, with the Peoples Party gaining two-thirds majority.

1988 — Estonian Sovereignty Declaration
The Estonian Sovereignty Declaration (Estonian: suveräänsusdeklaratsioon), fully: Declaration on the Sovereignty of the Estonian SSR (Deklaratsioon Eesti NSV suveräänsusest) was issued on November 16, 1988 during the Singing Revolution in Estonia. The declaration asserted Estonia's sovereignty and the supremacy of the Estonian laws over the laws of the Soviet Union. Estonia's parliament also laid claim to the republic's natural resources: land, inland waters, forests, mineral deposits and to the means of industrial production, agriculture, construction, state banks, transportation, municipal services, etc. in the territory of Estonia's borders. November 16 is now celebrated annually as the "Day of Declaration of Sovereignty".

The result was a victory for Liamine Zeroual, head of the High Council of State at the time, who won 61% of the vote. The National Assembly election resulted in a landslide win for SWAPO, which won 55 of the 78 seats with over 75% of the vote. Operation Marne Courageous was a military operation in 2007 conducted by the United States 101st Airborne Division and Iraqi Security Forces between 16 - 19 November 2007 in Anbar province, Iraq. The operation involved 750 troops and 70 civilians, supported by helicopter gunships, who occupied the villages of Owesat and Betra, approximately 15 miles from Baghdad. The objective of the operation was to secure the western side of the Euphrates, an area formerly occupied by insurgents. A permanent base was constructed, Patrol Base Kemple, to maintain security in the area.
