The Battle of Axtorna or simply Axtorna, was a battle fought between the Kingdom of Sweden and the Kingdom of Denmark 20 October 1565 at Axtorna, a small village in what is today Falkenberg Municipality, Halland County in south-western Sweden.

1568 — Battle of Jodoigne
The Battle of Jodoigne was fought October 20th 1568 between Spanish and Dutch forces. The Spanish under Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba destroyed the rear guard of William the Silent's invading army, forcing him to abandon his invasion of the Netherlands and to retreat into Germany. The Dutch outnumbered the Spanish army, but were caught off-guard by the Spanish attack.

The Battle of Bucov or Teleajen River (called battle of Bukowo in Polish historiography) was fought during the Moldavian Magnate Wars between the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Principality of Wallachia, on October 20, 1600. Polish-Lithuanian forces under the command of Jan Zamoyski and Moldavian army of Ieremia Movilă defeated the Wallachian forces commanded by Michael the Brave.

1653 — Battle of Bordeaux (1653)
The Battle of Bordeaux was a naval engagement of the Franco-Spanish War of 1635 fought on 20 October 1653 in the Gironde estuary. A Spanish fleet under Álvaro de Bazán, 3rd Marquis of Santa Cruz, sent to relieve Bordeaux, at that time held by the nobles rose up against Louis XIV during the Fronde, encountered a great concentration of French warships belonging to Duke of Vendome's army in the channel of Blaye and captured or destroyed most of it. Shortly after a landing was made by some 1,600 soldiers of the Spanish Tercios which sacked the village of Montagne-sur-Gironde.

1771 — Battle of Bucharest (1771)
The Battle of Bucharest took place on 20 October 1771 and was an important event of the Russo-Turkish war. It occurred when the Ottomans tried to recapture Bucharest from the Russians. In the summer of 1771, Russia launched an offensive against the Turkish positions along the Danube, attacking Giurgiu, but this turned out to be unsuccessful and the initiative in actions passed to the Ottomans.

1827 — Battle of Navarino
The Battle of Navarino was a naval battle fought on 20 October 1827, during the Greek War of Independence (1821–32), in Navarino Bay (modern-day Pylos), on the west coast of the Peloponnese peninsula, in the Ionian Sea. An Ottoman armada, which, in addition to imperial warships, included squadrons from the eyalets (provinces) of Egypt, Tunis and Algiers, was destroyed by an Allied force of British, French and Russian vessels. It was the last major naval battle in history to be fought entirely with sailing ships, although most ships fought at anchor. The Allies' victory was achieved through superior firepower and gunnery.

La Vallette of the first-class frigate USS Congress in company with the sloop USS Portsmouth forced the Mexican garrison of Guaymas to evacuate the city under the threat of bombardment, then dismantled the seaward defenses of the city and thereafter controlled the city by the threat of bombardment by a sloop of war kept on station at the mouth of the harbor.

1863 — Battle of Rybnica
The Battle of Rybnica, one of many clashes of the January Uprising, took place on October 20, 1863, near the village of Rybnica, which at that time belonged to Russian-controlled Congress Poland. A party of 650 Polish insurgents, commanded by Dionizy Czachowski, clashed with a 500-strong detachment of the Imperial Russian Army. The clash ended in rebel victory; Russian losses were estimated at app. 50–60 killed, while Poles lost 27 killed and 30 wounded. On October 20, Czachowski and his party crossed the Vistula river, and headed northwards. News of the insurgent unit presence reached the town of Staszow, in which stationed a Russian garrison of infantry and dragoons.

It was intended to settle the two nations' remaining territorial differences at the conclusion of their involvement in the War of the Pacific and to stabilise post-bellum relations between them. The 1915 South African general election was held on 20 October 1915 for the 130 seats in the House of Assembly of the Union of South Africa. This was the second Union Parliament. The governing South African Party (SAP) of General Louis Botha emerged from the election as the largest party, but did not receive an overall majority. Botha formed a minority government, during the second successive term of the SAP in office, which survived with some parliamentary support from the official opposition Unionist Party.

The Ontario general election, 1919 was the 15th general election held in the Province of Ontario, Canada. It was held on October 20, 1919, to elect the 111 Members of the 15th Legislative Assembly of Ontario ("MLAs"). The Ontario Conservative Party, led by Sir William Hearst, was soundly defeated in a bid for a fifth consecutive term in office by the newly formed United Farmers of Ontario. This election put an end to 14 years of continuous Ontario Conservative Party rule, much of it under James Whitney. Whitney had died in 1914.

The election to the Greater Berlin City Council on October 20, 1946 was the first and last overall Berlin election in the period between the end of the Second World War and the reunification of Germany. The clear winner of the election was the SPD under Otto Ostrowski , which with 48.7% and 63 of 130 seats fell just three seats short of holding an absolute majority. The CDU finished in second under Ferdinand Friedensburg with 22.2% of votes and 29 seats. The SED suffered a sensational defeat, winning just 19.8% of the vote and 26 mandates.

1948 — 1948 KLM Constellation air disaster
A KLM Lockheed L-049 Constellation airliner (named Nijmegen and registered PH-TEN) crashed into high ground near Glasgow Prestwick Airport, Scotland, on 20 October 1948; all 40 aboard died. A subsequent inquiry found that the accident was likely caused by the crew's reliance on a combination of erroneous charts and incomplete weather forecasts, causing the crew to become distracted and disoriented in the inclement conditions.

A general election took place in Japan on October 20, 1996. Incumbent Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto of the coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party, New Party Sakigake and the Social Democratic Party won the election. This is the first election under new elections rules established in 1993 with single non-transferable vote, single-member districts, and some seats being distributed according to proportional representation. Before this election, each district was represented by multiple members, sometimes from the same party, causing intra-party competition. Under the new rules, each district has only one representative now representing a wide range of interests for his or her district.

No Mercy (2002) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and presented by Subway that took place on October 20, 2002, at the Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It was the fifth annual WWE No Mercy event and featured wrestlers from the Raw and SmackDown! brand. To date, it is the only WWE pay-per-view event ever held in the state of Arkansas. The 2004 Norfolk Island legislative election was held on 20 October 2004 to elect the 11th Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly, the prime legislative body of Norfolk Island. The election was held three months after the murder of Assembly member Ivens Buffett, who also served as Deputy Chief Minister and Lands Minister. His seat remained vacant until the election. Geoff Gardner remained Chief Minister following the election.

The UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions is a binding international legal instrument and UNESCO convention adopted by the UNESCO General Conference on 20 October 2005, during the 33rd session of the UNESCO General Conference held in Paris, France on 3–21 October 2005. The convention compliments the previously established provisions of UNESCO including the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity of 2001. "The Convention recognises the rights of Parties to take measures to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions, and impose obligations at both domestic and international levels on Parties."

The show was held in honor of the deceased members of The Pitbulls (Anthony Durante) and The Public Enemy (Rocco Rock and Johnny Grunge), both popular tag teams during the early years of Extreme Championship Wrestling, and featured some of the top tag teams on the independent circuit in an 8-team tournament. In keeping with ECW tradition, all matches were no-countout/no-disqualification.
