1813 — Battle of the Thames
The Battle of the Thames, also known as the Battle of Moraviantown, was a United States victory in the War of 1812 against the United Kingdom and Tecumseh's Confederacy. It took place on October 5, 1813 in Upper Canada, near present-day Chatham, Ontario. British troops under Major General Henry Procter had occupied Detroit until the U.S. Navy gained control of Lake Erie, depriving them of their supplies. Procter was forced to retreat north up the river Thames to Moraviantown, where his allies, the tribal confederacy under Shawnee leader Tecumseh, had no choice but to follow.

The 1819 Delaware gubernatorial election was held on October 5, 1819. Incumbent Federalist Governor John Clark was unable to seek re-election due to term limits. State Senator Henry Molleston ran as Clark's successor, winning the Federalist nomination. He faced Manaen Bull, Clark's 1816 opponent, and the Democratic-Republican nominee. Molleston won by a fairly wide margin, but died on November 11, 1819, prior to assuming office.

The 1835 Michigan gubernatorial election was held on October 5, 1835. Democratic nominee Stevens T. Mason defeated Whig nominee John Biddle with 90.31% of the vote. This was the first state election for the Governor of Michigan; in addition to electing a governor (and lieutenant governor), Michigan also elected a prospective congressman and approved a state constitution.

1855 — Battle of Toppenish Creek
The Battle of Toppenish Creek was the first engagement of the Yakima War in Washington. Fought on October 5, 1855, a company of American soldiers, under Major Granville O. Haller, was attacked by a band of Yakamas, under Chief Kamiakin, and compelled to retreat. The battle occurred in Yakima Valley, several miles northwest of Fort Walla Walla, along Toppenish Creek and was a major victory for Native American forces.

The Battle of Hatchie's Bridge, also known as Battle of Davis Bridge or Matamora, was fought on October 5, 1862, in Hardeman County and McNairy County, Tennessee, as the final engagement of the Iuka–Corinth Campaign of the American Civil War. Confederate Major General Earl Van Dorn's army successfully evaded capture by the Union Army, following his defeat at the Battle of Corinth. Van Dorn's (Confederate) Army of Tennessee retreated from Corinth, Mississippi, on October 4, 1862, but Union Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans did not send forces in pursuit until the morning of October 5. Maj. Gen. Edward O.C.

1898 — Battle of Sugar Point
The Battle of Sugar Point, or the Battle of Leech Lake, was fought on October 5, 1898 between the 3rd U.S. Infantry and members of the Pillager Band of Chippewa Indians in a failed attempt to apprehend Pillager Ojibwe Bugonaygeshig ("Old Bug" or "Hole-In-The-Day"), as the result of a dispute with Indian Service officials on the Leech Lake Reservation in Cass County, Minnesota. Often referred to as "the last Indian Uprising in the United States", the engagement was also the first battle to be fought in the area of the United States known as the Old Northwest since the Black Hawk War in 1832.

The 1923 Chinese presidential election was the election held on 5 October 1923 in Beijing for the third term of the President of China. Zhili warlord Cao Kun won the election through bribery. The capital was under control of the Zhili Clique after the Zhili–Anhui War. In 1922 the Zhili warlords Wu Peifu and Cao Kun restored the "old" parliament elected in 1912.

The 1925 FA Charity Shield was the twelfth staging of the FA Charity Shield, an annual association football match arranged to raise funds for charitable causes supported by the Football Association (the FA), the governing body of football in England. For the fourth time, the match was contested by select teams of amateur and professional players. It was played on 5 October 1925 at White Hart Lane, London, and ended as a 6–1 win for the Amateurs. Claude Ashton scored four goals and Frank Macey two for the Amateurs; Charlie Hannaford scored the Professionals' goal.

The 1965 Greater Anchorage Borough election was an election for borough offices in Anchorage, Alaska. It was held on October 5, 1965. 8,535 ballots were cast. In a proposition ("Prop B"), the borough's voters voted overwhelmingly against reclassifying from a second class borough into a first class borough, maintaining the borough classification that they had voted to adopt two years prior.

1974 — Guildford pub bombings
The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) detonated two 6-pound (2.7-kilogram) gelignite bombs at two pubs in Guildford, Surrey, England on 5 October 1974. The pubs were targeted that evening because they were popular with British Army personnel stationed at Pirbright barracks. Four soldiers and one civilian were killed. Sixty-five people were wounded.

Operación Primicia (Spanish pronunciation: [opeɾaˈsjon pɾiˈmisja], "Operation Scoop") was a large guerrilla attack that took place on 5 October 1975, in Formosa, Argentina. It was the largest attack ever launched by the paramilitary group Montoneros, which attempted to seize the barracks of the 29th Forest infantry regiment. This attack worsened the Dirty War, and indirectly led to the 1976 Argentine coup d'état the following year.

A national plebiscite was held in Chile on 5 October 1988 to decide whether Augusto Pinochet, the head of a military dictatorship that had ruled the country since the 1973 coup d'état, would remain president for a further eight-year term. Voters were asked simply to approve or reject Pinochet as the sole candidate proposed by the commanders-in-chief of the armed forces, a mechanism set out in the transitory provisions of the 1980 Constitution.

1997 — Montenegrin presidential election, 1997
Presidential elections were held in the Republic of Montenegro on 5 October 1997, with a second round run-off on 19 October. Although incumbent President Momir Bulatović, who was supportive of Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milošević, received a plurality of the vote in the first round, he was defeated in the second round by Prime Minister Milo Đukanović. Despite OCSE recognising the elections as being "generally fair", Bulatović claimed the elections had been fraudulent and refused to recognise the result. Amid violent protests, Đukanović was sworn into office in January 1998.

1999 — Ladbroke Grove rail crash
The Ladbroke Grove rail crash (also known as the Paddington train crash) was a rail accident which occurred on 5 October 1999 at Ladbroke Grove in London, United Kingdom. With 31 people killed and more than 520 injured, this remains the worst rail accident on the Great Western Main Line. This was the second major accident on the Great Western Main Line in just over two years, the first being the Southall rail crash of September 1997, a few miles west of this accident. Both crashes would have been prevented by an operational Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, wider fitting of which had been rejected on cost grounds.

The election was won by the incumbent Governor Apirak Kosayothin, placing him in his second consecutive four-year term in office, winning 45.93 percent of the vote. Of a total of 4,087,329 eligible voters, 2,214,320 voted, giving a turnout rate of 54.18 percent, lower than the 70 percent target expected by the Election Committee. Sixteen candidates contested the election. Mr Apirak, candidate for the opposition Democrat Party, was seen as the favourite.
