1781 — Battle of Jersey
The Battle of Jersey (6 January 1781) was an attempt by French forces to invade Jersey and remove the threat the island posed to French and American shipping in the Anglo-French War. Jersey provided a base for British privateers, and France, engaged in the war as an ally of the United States, sent an expedition to gain control of the island. The French expedition ultimately failed. Its commander, Baron Phillipe de Rullecourt, died of wounds sustained in the fighting. The battle is often remembered for the death of the British officer Major Peirson, and a painting based on his final moments by John Singleton Copley.

1839 — The Night of the Big Wind begins across Ireland
A powerful windstorm began sweeping across Ireland on January 6, bringing destructive winds that continued into the following night. The storm damaged or destroyed homes, wrecked ships and killed hundreds of people across Ireland and parts of Britain. In northern Dublin, an estimated fifth to a quarter of houses sustained damage. Contemporary accounts also describe severe losses at sea, where many ships could not reach shelter. The event became a lasting part of Irish memory as the Night of the Big Wind. Its exact onset, geographic reach and reported toll distinguish it from an ordinary winter storm.
